One of the most sacred Hindu pilgrimage sites in India — where Lord Shiva revealed the secrets of immortality to Goddess Parvati.
Swayambhu Manifestation of Lord Shiva
Inside the Amarnath Cave at 3,888 metres, a Shivling forms naturally every year from ice — without any human intervention. Unlike other Shiva temples with sculpted lingams, this one is formed by freezing water dripping from the cave ceiling. Hindus believe this is a direct manifestation of Lord Shiva himself.
The Story of Immortality
According to Hindu scripture, Lord Shiva chose the secluded Amarnath Cave to narrate the secret of immortality (Amar Katha) to Goddess Parvati. The cave was believed to be chosen so that no living being would hear the secret — yet legend says a pair of pigeons overheard it and became immortal. Even today, many pilgrims report seeing white pigeons inside the cave.
One of the 12 Sacred Dhams
Amarnath is considered one of the holiest Shiva Dhams in Hinduism. The pilgrimage during Shravan (the sacred month of Lord Shiva) is believed to cleanse all sins, grant moksha and fulfil devotees' wishes. The Yatra concludes on Shravan Purnima — Raksha Bandhan — the auspicious full moon.
The Amarnath Yatra involves high-altitude trekking. Proper preparation is essential for a safe and blessed journey.
