🕉 About the Holy Shrine

Shri Amarnath Ji — The Divine Abode

One of the most sacred Hindu pilgrimage sites in India — where Lord Shiva revealed the secrets of immortality to Goddess Parvati.

The Sacred Ice Shivling

Swayambhu Manifestation of Lord Shiva

Inside the Amarnath Cave at 3,888 metres, a Shivling forms naturally every year from ice — without any human intervention. Unlike other Shiva temples with sculpted lingams, this one is formed by freezing water dripping from the cave ceiling. Hindus believe this is a direct manifestation of Lord Shiva himself.

  • The lingam waxes and wanes with the phases of the moon — largest on Shravan Purnima
  • The cave entrance is approximately 40 yards wide and 75 feet high
  • Managed by the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB), constituted in 2000

The Legend of Amar Katha

The Story of Immortality

According to Hindu scripture, Lord Shiva chose the secluded Amarnath Cave to narrate the secret of immortality (Amar Katha) to Goddess Parvati. The cave was believed to be chosen so that no living being would hear the secret — yet legend says a pair of pigeons overheard it and became immortal. Even today, many pilgrims report seeing white pigeons inside the cave.

  • The pilgrimage is mentioned in the Bhrigu Samhita and ancient scriptures
  • Rishi Bhrigu is said to have first discovered the sacred cave
  • Thousands of devotees undertake the yatra annually in the holy month of Shravan

Significance in Hinduism

One of the 12 Sacred Dhams

Amarnath is considered one of the holiest Shiva Dhams in Hinduism. The pilgrimage during Shravan (the sacred month of Lord Shiva) is believed to cleanse all sins, grant moksha and fulfil devotees' wishes. The Yatra concludes on Shravan Purnima — Raksha Bandhan — the auspicious full moon.

  • Pilgrimage mentioned in Skandha Purana and Nilmat Purana
  • The chant "Har Har Mahadev" echoes throughout the sacred route
  • Completing the Yatra is considered equivalent to visiting all 12 Jyotirlingas

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions Answered

Everything you need to know before booking your Amarnath Yatra 2026.

When is Amarnath Yatra 2026?
Amarnath Yatra 2026 commences on 3 July 2026 and concludes on 9 August 2026 (Raksha Bandhan / Shravan Purnima). The pilgrimage lasts 38 days. Only 15,000 pilgrims are permitted per day for safety.
How do I register for Amarnath Yatra 2026?
Registration is available online at jksasb.nic.in or offline at 533+ designated bank branches (PNB, SBI, J&K Bank, Yes Bank, ICICI). You need a Compulsory Health Certificate (CHC), Aadhaar / govt. photo ID and a passport-size photo. Fee: ₹150–220 per person. Opened 14 April 2026.

Need help? Call us at +91 91037 52910 — we guide you through the entire process.
What is the age limit for Amarnath Yatra?
Only individuals aged between 13 and 75 years are eligible. Children below 13 and adults above 75 are not permitted. Pregnant women are not permitted to undertake the Yatra for safety reasons. A Compulsory Health Certificate (CHC) from an authorised doctor is mandatory for all pilgrims.
Which route is better — Pahalgam or Baltal?
Pahalgam (48 km, 4–5 days) is the traditional longer route — scenic, gradual ascent, ideal for first-timers and those who want the complete Himalayan experience. Baltal (14 km, 1–2 days) is shorter but very steep — good for those with limited time or who are physically very fit. Both routes require advance registration. Call us for personalised guidance.
What is an RFID card and where do I collect it?
An RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) card is a tracking wristband mandatory for every registered pilgrim. It must be worn around the neck throughout the Yatra for security and emergency response. You can collect it from designated RFID centres in Jammu and Kashmir after completing registration. Keep your Aadhaar handy for collection.
Are helicopter services available in Amarnath Yatra 2026?
For Amarnath Yatra 2026, all routes to the cave shrine have been declared a No Flying Zone between July 1 and August 10. Hence, helicopter services will not be available for the Yatra season 2026. However, we offer pony, palki (palanquin) and porter services for senior pilgrims via our packages.
Does Mid Holidays help with registration and RFID?
Yes! We guide you through the entire registration process — online or offline — and help with RFID card collection. Our team is based in Srinagar and assists pilgrims from across India. Call us at +91 91037 52910 or write to midholidays@gmail.com for complete step-by-step help.
What should I do in case of altitude sickness?
Medical posts are available every 2 km on both routes. If you experience symptoms — headache, breathlessness, nausea, dizziness — descend immediately to a lower altitude and contact the nearest medical facility. Our packages include oxygen cylinders and trained guides to handle such situations. Do not ignore symptoms and do not accept advice from another sick yatri as their judgment may be impaired.
